At the time of the 1911 census, James still lived at home with his parents, James and Alice. Aged 22, he was employed as a Clerk (Accountant) at the Wire Works.
He joined the Royal Air Force on 12th March 1918 for the Duration of the War. He gave his occupation as Accountant. He was posted to Woking, where he was employed as a Pay Clerk and then he went to France on 18th July 1918, remaining overseas until 29th February 1919.
He was transferred to the Reserve on 30th March 1919 and fully discharged on 30th April 1920.
His service is commemorated on the Prescot Parish Church Men's Institute
James was entitled to the British War Medal and Victory Medal, receiving these in November 1921.
After the war, James married Mary Naylor in Prescot in 1923. He died on 6th January 1930, aged 42.
